SAVANNAH FAITH JACKSON: THE DREAM IS THE TRUTH

The Dream is the Truth is an ongoing project in which I’m photographing Blackmothers and daughters together in various moments of pause and connection. Whether grounded by the domestic settings of their homes or pictured outdoors where they create a space of peace for themselves, the mothers offer protection to their daughters, while their daughters exist in powerful instances of reverie. These photographs are situated in the history of Black vernacular photography, more specifically studio portraiture. With this project, I aim to create an archive that honors the relationship between Black mothers and daughters.
The title, “the dream is the truth”, is an excerpt from the 1973 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. The passage the line comes from describes the way in which women realize their dreams. This project is a near-literal depiction of dreaming, being supported through the honoring of matrilineage.
